Public Awareness Policies

The aim of the Estonian Patent Office’s awareness-raising work is to increase awareness of the nature of intellectual property, its value, and the possibilities for legal protection. At the heart of this work is the desire to make the topic of intellectual property understandable, visible, and practically applicable.

In our work, we focus primarily on providing clear and practical information to young people, entrepreneurs, educational institutions, partners, and the wider public. We explain why it is important to protect one’s intellectual property, what opportunities the legal system offers for this, and how the Estonian Patent Office can support this process.

To this end, we use a variety of communication channels. In addition to media relations and organising events, we share information on our website, social media channels and in official gazettes, and we run campaigns on intellectual property topics.

Official gazettes

The Estonian Patent Office publishes the following official periodicals:

The official gazettes of the Estonian Patent Office are published as e-gazettes on the website of the Patent Office. In 2024, an important change came into effect – the Estonian Trademark Gazette began to be published twice a month: on the 1st and 15th day of each month. This change was made to further speed up the process of issuing trade marks.

The Estonian Industrial Design Gazette is published on the first working day of each month, and the Estonian Patent Gazette and the Estonian Utility Model Gazette on the 15th.

In its official gazettes, the Estonian Patent Office publishes the decisions on the registration of objects of industrial property (trade marks, inventions, industrial designs, layout designs of integrated circuits) and amendments to the corresponding registers (the register of trade marks and service marks, the register of utility models, the patent register, register of industrial designs, the register of layout-designs of integrated circuits and the register of European patents valid in Estonia), as well as all legal acts on industrial property protection, including the original texts and translations of acts and international agreements.

Selection of the Trade Mark of the Month

Each month, an internal working group selects one of the trade marks from among those registered by Estonian companies that month. Candidates for the Trade Mark of the Month are particularly rich in wordplay or conceptual play, melodious and inventive, or otherwise visually and linguistically striking and memorable. The selected trade marks are highlighted on social media and the Estonian Patent Office blog, and they often make their way into the wider media from there.

Trade Mark and Design of the Year 2024

In 2025, the Estonian Patent Office organised the ‘Trade Mark and Design of the Year 2024’ event, where, for the first time, registered designs by Estonian companies were recognised alongside the best trade marks.

Twelve trade marks from 2024 competed in the Trade Mark of the Year category. A public vote was held to determine the winner of the Trade Mark of the Year title, which was won by Lumiorav OÜ, a producer of magnesium water, with its Lumiorava trade mark. Special prizes were also awarded to their favourites by the Association of Estonian Patent Attorneys, the Institute of the Estonian Language, the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Estonian Public Relations Association.

In the design category, registered designs that combined functionality, user-friendliness and innovation competed. A jury of design experts selected a wheeled sledge belonging to Snoller OÜ as the best of the year, which offers novelty in terms of transport on snow and in urban environments.

EHE Eesti 2025

‘Ehe Eesti – Eesti ettevõttele eesti nimi’ (‘Authentic Estonia – an Estonian name for an Estonian company’), organised by the Mother Tongue Society, recognised the best Estonian-language trade marks for the second year running.

The jury selected EHAPUNA and TÕRVANINA as the best Estonian-language trade marks, both of which were registered with the Estonian Patent Office in 2024. These are the craft beer brands of Kärdla Pruulikoja OÜ. The jury found that the names are multi-layered and eye-catching, and playfully allude to Hiiumaa and its natural surroundings.

The special prize of the Estonian Patent Office was awarded to the LÄVEL trade mark, registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office by the door manufacturer Läveli Group.

Trademark quiz

The interactive trademark quiz ‘How well do you know Estonian trade marks?’ was available to play both on the website and on social media. The game was part of the events marking World Intellectual Property Day on 26 April.

In the game, we asked players to guess the names of 16 well-known domestic brands. In addition to the entertainment value of the game, we wished to emphasise the importance of a trade mark in shaping the reputation of a company.

Influencer campaign

The campaign, carried out in the spring in collaboration with the marketing agency Goal Marketing, featured two influencers from different fields: Marko Ala, owner of the furniture company Oot-Oot Stuudio, and Mari Parve, owner of Kuma Design. A separate video was created with each influencer, introducing the process of protecting intellectual property and highlighting their personal experiences.

The videos were distributed via the influencers’ social media channels and as paid advertising on Meta and Google platforms. The target groups were small and medium-sized enterprises, designers and design agencies, as well as businesses operating in the creative sector.

The campaign was viewed by 242,302 people, the videos were watched a total of 532,617 times across all platforms, and the Estonian Patent Office’s website was visited 7,312 times.

Estonian Patent Office Strategy Day

Estonian Patent Office Strategy Day brought together nearly 70 participants from various sectors (entrepreneurs, business organisations, universities, government agencies and patent attorneys) to discuss how to strengthen Estonia’s intellectual property ecosystem and thereby support innovation and economic development. The day began with presentations addressing the current state and future trends in the protection of intellectual property, the links between innovation and intellectual property, and opportunities for commercialising intellectual property. Practical experiences of transferring research results into business were also shared.

Strategy Day centred on workshops, where discussions took place on both the division of roles and opportunities for cooperation to ensure better support for entrepreneurs, as well as on raising young people’s awareness of intellectual property and the practical needs related to protecting entrepreneurs’ intellectual property. The discussions highlighted that raising awareness must begin within the education system, and that intellectual property should be a natural part of the curriculum. The need to develop modern and user-friendly services, in which artificial intelligence and new technologies play a significant role, was also emphasised.

A shared understanding was reached that the protection of intellectual property is not merely a narrow specialist topic, but a strategic issue with a direct impact on Estonia’s capacity for innovation and the competitiveness of the economy. Strategy Day provided valuable input for future activities aimed at turning good ideas into practical solutions and strengthening cooperation between all participants in the ecosystem.
